Summertime is a great time to read a good book, especially one that may inspire you to travel! After my recent trip to Asia, I decided that the book I will be reading this month (and that I am recommending as a July Read) is Girl in Translation by Jean Kwok. Jean Kwok writes about the Asian American emigration experience. Her website describes the plot of Girl In Translation: "When Kimberly Chang and her mother emigrate from Hong Kong to Brooklyn squalor, she quickly begins a secret double life: exceptional schoolgirl during the day, Chinatown sweatshop worker in the evenings." Here is a Book Synopsis by Reading Group Guides: What is it like to be surrounded every day by a language and culture you only half understand? How would it change your life? Introducing a fresh, exciting Chinese-American voice, Girl in Translation is an inspiring debut about a young immigrant in America, a smart girl balancing schoolwork and factory labor, custom and desire, a girl who is forced at a young age to take responsibility for her family’s future, with decisions she may later regret.
Sounds good to me...can't wait to start reading! What good books have any of you jet setters read lately???
